USTA Selects Sport Group’s Laykold as the New Court Surface for the US Open

The USTA announced that following an extensive RFP process, Laykold has been selected as the new court surface for the US Open and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The new agreement is in place for five years. The 2020 US Open begins on Monday, August 24 with US Open Fan Week and the US Open Qualifying Tournament.  The Main Draw of the 2020 US Open runs from August 31, through September 13.

The new Laykold courts will be manufactured by Advanced Polymer Technology (APT), a member of Sport Group, the world’s largest business dedicated to sports surfaces. APT is unique in the industry for its fully integrated global supply chain – from raw materials to installation.  This integrated supply chain will allow for the consistency in court quality control, playing performance and sustainability. Laykold courts are the only courts with vapor barrier designed specifically for the court system, which also greatly increases consistency in both court performance and court speed.

The Laykold courts also come with the strongest environment credentials in the industry.  APT is the only ISO 14001 environmental-certified court manufacturer in the world.  As such, they are fully compliant with all aspects of sustainability and aligned with the USTA’s sustainability commitments and values.

“At the conclusion of the complete transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, we felt it was time to explore all new approaches and technologies to court surfacing,” said Danny Zausner, Chief Operating Officer of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.  “During this exploration, Laykold quickly rose to the top, and working with them, we are confident we will have the best-playing and best-performing courts in the world.”

“Laykold has been trusted in the tennis court industry for 75 years and to add the US Open to our roster of major events around the world is a landmark moment for us,” said Jim Sacco, Chief Operating Officer of Advanced Polymer Technology.  “We have been waiting for an opportunity to showcase our quality at the world’s biggest tennis tournament, and we are delighted to have been chosen.  We are grand slam ready.”

Laykold also provides court surfaces for many professional tennis events and professional tennis exhibitions around the world, including the Miami Open and New York Open. The USTA has previously utilized Laykold at three Fed Cup ties held in the United States.

For Tokyo, For the Planet

It is one year to go to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the hockey venues are underway and on track. The competition matches will be played at Oi Hockey Stadium where construction started in late 2018 and the final surfacing was completed in June 2019.

Poligras Tokyo GT – supporting Tokyo’s carbon neutral vision

With superior player and environmental performance Poligras Tokyo GT has been chosen as the hockey turf for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Poligras Tokyo GT is the first hockey turf to be made from regrowable raw materials and was designed to support Tokyo’s ambitious carbon-neutral targets and FIH’s commitment to sustainable hockey.

The turf features breakthrough Green Technology:

  • Made from 60% sugar cane
  • Requires 2/3 less water than previous Olympic turfs

Climate Positive Hockey

‘I’m Green™ polyethylene, developed by Braskem, is a plastic obtained from ethanol derived from sugar cane that has already been processed for food. The sugar cane captures carbon dioxide from the environment, which means for every kilogram of polyethylene used in the Olympic hockey turfs almost five kilograms of CO2 will be saved.

Poligras Tokyo GT turfs have already been installed in nine countries as clubs, colleges, hockey associations and cities make the commitment to ‘turf responsibly’.

This is positive for hockey, for Tokyo and the planet.

An unrivaled Olympic history

Tokyo 2020 continues Sport Group’s long association with the Olympic Games. Sport Group’s brands, AstroTurf and Polytan have provided the hockey turfs for 9 of the 12 Olympics which have featured hockey on synthetic turf.

Rekortan and The Penn Relays Celebrate Historic Milestones this Year

Philadelphia, PA – Two historic names in the track and field world have reached historic milestones in 2019.  Rekortan, the leading name in premium track systems is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and the Penn Relays, America’s oldest and largest track and field competition will have its 125th running this year.  The two legendary icons will come together once again at the event as Rekortan is honored to enter into its 31st consecutive year as the Official Surface of the event.

Held each year during the last week of April, The Penn Relays regularly attract over 100,000 fans during a 3 day period with as many as 50,000 attending on Saturdays. The event will host more than 15,000 participants from High Schools, Colleges and Track Clubs throughout North America and abroad. It is held at the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field, the oldest stadium in the country that functions as both a football and track stadium.

Rekortan is excited to be hosting the Coaches Hospitality Suite during the event.  Head Coaches can enjoy a climate controlled sitting area with a live feed of the relays along with beverages from 9AM to 3PM and light appetizers from 11AM to 3PM. There will be giveaway items for the coaches, samples, and a friendly staff of Rekortan consultants on hand to answer any questions about the leading provider of technologically advanced, premium track systems.

Also at the Hospitality Suite, there will be live demonstrations of Rekortan Smart, the world’s first smart running surface at 9AM, 11AM, and 1PM on Thursday and Friday and additional demonstrations at 9AM and 11AM on Saturday.  With the Rekortan Smart system, the athlete wears a high-tech sensor or smartphone on a waist belt. As soon as the athlete starts to move, the sensor/smartphone begins logging the data. Whenever the athlete passes a magnetic gate, the sensor detects the magnet in the surface as a timing point. This allows motion and time data to be divided into sections between the gates and assessed accordingly. The sensor is able to determine where the athlete is on the surface and it is also able to distinguish between rests and changes in direction. Assessment results allow for more effective training programs. This technology is great for not only athletes, but for coaches and strength and conditioning professionals to develop programs and help prevent injuries.

“We are thrilled to once again be a part of this wonderful event,” said Sydney Stahlbaum, Marketing Director for Rekortan. “We look forward to The Penn Relays each year and celebrating our anniversaries together makes this year even more special.”

The Penn Relays are held annually during the last week of April. The dates for this year’s event are April 25th through the 27th.  A full schedule of events and detailed race times may be found at

The Magic Behind the Miami Open 2019!

Laykold Transforms the Miami Open from NFL Stadium to Major Tennis Tournament in Record Time!

Laykold has been the official surface provider of the Miami Open for the past 35 years. However, the tournament’s move to Hard Rock Stadium, located in Miami Gardens Florida, a multipurpose NFL Stadium and home to the Miami Dolphins added another level of complexity and time challenges to this high-profile project.

This project had four major challenges to overcome:

The creation of a court color palette that would give the event a distinct Miami flavor, but at the same time deliver against the strict ball visibility requirements of Broadcast and meet player performance standards.

There was a strong desire for court speed consistency between the venues with a ‘ITF 3 Medium’ Pace-Rating request.

As the official home of the Miami Dolphins, access to the venue was limited. Three weeks out from the tournament, we only had an asphalt base in stadium for the show courts.

With a requirement for additional courts, a huge transformation of the parking space around the stadium needed to take place. We could not begin installation work on nine of these courts until two months prior to the tournament commencing.

Laykold’s approach to delivering this project was technical and consultative to ensure a high performing result under very tight time constraints.

The color mixing needed to be 100% perfect to ensure accurate matching with existing surfaces. New color recommendations had to be based on Laykold’s understanding of color performance against the environmental conditions in the region.
As a result, Laykold®:
• applied 11 color matches
• explored 24 color combinations
• trialed colors on three test courts
• completed one full court mock-up
Colors were also reviewed by players and tested by Broadcast for TV viewing visibility.

To achieve the desired ‘ITF 3 Medium’ Pace-Rating, Laykold customized our product mix and installation methods to achieve the right ball speed for the tournament.

With only the asphalt base three weeks prior to tournament starting, a quick turnaround from Team Laykold® and installation partner Fast-
Dry Courts meant the courts were ready in time.

Laykold converted the outdoor parking area at Hard Rock Stadium into 18 practice and 11 tournament courts.
• Nine courts could not be installed until two months prior to tournament starting
• Quick turnaround from Team Laykold® installation partner Fast-Dry Courts
• At conclusion of tournament, courts were transformed back to parking for Hard Rock Stadium.

The Miami Open was successfully delivered as a high end, 5th Major ATP tennis tournament in record time with some of the highest fan attendance in history.
• Player feedback has been very positive around court consistency and speed. With the winner of the tournament Roger Federer saying “I really think it’s actually pretty good.”
• The new Miami Open court colors; Laykold Oasis Blue & Biscayne Blue were the talk of the tournament among tennis enthusiasts and spectators. Perfectly capturing the sea, the sky and the sizzle of ‘hard rock’ tennis.
• Laykold developed new technology, to be employed in 2020, which will allow court coatings to be laid on new asphalt within a reduced time period. This Laykold innovation has been at the heart of Hard Rock Stadium’s ability to deliver the Miami Open and host the 2020 Super Bowl only days apart.

Atlanta Track Club Installs Rekortan Smart Sports Surface Technology

Atlanta, GA – Rekortan and SportGroup have been working with system developers, Humotion GmbH, to create an exclusive contract for an intelligent sports surface technology. This smart technology provides professional athletes, ambitious runners and anyone who wants the perfect solution for recording and documenting their run and sprint times. Using state-of-the-art sensor technology combined with magnetic gates, all key parameters are logged.  This includes distance, running times and splits as well as measuring the number, lengths and frequencies of each step of an athlete through each gate.

With this system, the athlete wears a high-tech sensor or smartphone on a waist belt.

These smart surfaces can be installed in new or existing tracks, and can also be used for turf applications. Rekortan has an option of mobile gates that do not need to be integrated into the surface and can be placed anywhere to conduct performance testing. With Rekortan Smart’s mobile timing gates, you can take your gates with you wherever you are – the playing field, practice field, gym, or backyard.

The Atlanta Track Club is the first to have a Rekortan Smart installation in the United States currently. Cheney Stadium was originally a prefabricated rubber track surface that has being updated to a Rekortan Resurface System. Guy Thomas, Director of Track Operations for AstroTurf & Rekortan, took the lead for this installation which was being retrofitted into the existing track. With help from Nagle Athletic Surfacing’s, Matt Synder, together they installed 54 magnetic rods into Cheney Stadium. The installation process was fairly quick taking only one day to complete. Every installation, once completed, includes an in-person instruction on how to use the diagnostics software and sensors. Trevor Merkosky, with Advanced Polymer Technology, attended this event along with Johannes Rosenmoeller (CEO) and Stefan Berkow, of Humotion GmbH. During this event, Trevor and Stefan gave a presentation of how to use the Smart technology. During the presentation they demonstrated how to wear the sensor, how to perform the tests/running through the magnetic gates, and then how to view all the data using the diagnostic software. The event had a very successful turnout with Coaches and athletes from all around the area that came to learn about the technology and ask questions.  For more information on Rekortan Smart, please contact Trevor Merkosky at 724-452-3920 or

Laykold Joins Wilson and Recycle Balls Initiative

Laykold - SG

CHICAGO and Burlington, VT, October 16, 2018Wilson Sporting Goods Co., and RecycleBalls announced today they are partnering to collect, recycle, and repurpose tennis balls across the United States. RecycleBalls is a non-profit organization founded in 2014, with the goal of collecting and recycling the 125 million tennis balls that end up in US landfills each year and then converting these tennis balls into innovative and sustainable products. The Wilson/RecycleBalls partnership aims to recycle 20 million tennis balls in the U.S. over the next three years.

“This program with RecycleBalls gives our brand and players a truly viable way to make our communities and our sport better,” said Kyle Schlegel, Global Marketing Director, Wilson Racquet Sports. “We chose to work with the RecycleBalls team as their passion for sustainability in the game matched our own, and they have spent the past several years building a strong infrastructure, operations system, and outreach programs to make recycling and repurposing tennis balls a reality.”

“Wilson and RecycleBalls are making a commitment to keep tennis balls out of landfills and repurposing them into socially relevant products like tennis courts, playgrounds, turf, and more,” said Derrick Senior, Founder of RecycleBalls. “What started as a mission my son and I shared is, with Wilson Sporting Goods’ help, becoming a nationally recognized and adopted program. To date, our growing partner network, which has nearly 650 members, has kept nearly one million tennis balls out of US landfills.”

The newest member of the RecycleBalls partner network is Sport Group, the world’s largest sports surface manufacturer. Sport Group will use recycled tennis ball material in their Laykold Masters tennis courts.

“I am delighted that Sport Group has come on board with their Laykold court brand, which is one of the most well-known brands in the game,” added Senior. “It is a great story for tennis – the balls go from bouncing on the court to being used in the court.”

RecycleBalls offers a cost-effective solution for partner facilities and organizations by providing specialized bins for the collection of tennis ball donations at clubs and public facilities nationwide. These bins are placed directly on tennis courts, giving players a convenient way to be part of the solution.

All donation bins double as a shipping box with conveniently attached prepaid UPS shipping labels. When full, UPS picks up the containers and delivers them to Recycleballs. Partners receive RecycleBalls’ tax-deductible donation receipts for all donated balls.

When tennis balls arrive at RecycleBalls’ Vermont facility, the non-profit removes the felt and grinds the balls into RecycleBalls Green-Gold, a natural crumb rubber mixture that is 99 percent felt-free. This mixture is then provided to partner organizations to create new, sustainable products such as Laykold tennis courts.

Tennis players and enthusiasts are invited to participate in this innovative program through their own tennis ball collection efforts or via donations to help fund RecycleBalls’ mission. For individuals wishing to recycle tennis balls, RecycleBalls provides online shipping labels along with a tax deductible donation receipt.
