Team Laykold staff and longtime installation partner Court One (NC) had the pleasure of being courtside for the ceremony.  Team Laykold did a fantastic job of carrying the torch with the Laykold brand for Michael Jordan and the Hornets Legacy Project, “Swarm to Serve”, which is dedicated to inspiring youth.  The initial project in 2016 also featured a Laykold court.

This year’s project consisted of seven courts, with the feature court under a pavilion.  The Laykold courts have custom purple and aqua lanes, on grey play areas.  All outside Laykold courts also have custom purple perimeters.  Team Laykold representative Craig Clements said, “Everyone raved about the feature Laykold court… it certainly has the wow factor!”

On hand for the dedication were newly appointed Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison, newly elected Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, Hornets management, players, and cheerleaders, Charlotte Parks& Rec, as well as the local high school band and cheerleaders.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, the 200+ kids in attendance had the opportunity to go through shooting and dribbling drills with the Hornets players on the Laykold court.  Team Laykold was thrilled to take part in such an incredible experience for the children of Charlotte NC!

Laykold Joins Wilson and Recycle Balls Initiative

Laykold - SG

CHICAGO and Burlington, VT, October 16, 2018Wilson Sporting Goods Co., and RecycleBalls announced today they are partnering to collect, recycle, and repurpose tennis balls across the United States. RecycleBalls is a non-profit organization founded in 2014, with the goal of collecting and recycling the 125 million tennis balls that end up in US landfills each year and then converting these tennis balls into innovative and sustainable products. The Wilson/RecycleBalls partnership aims to recycle 20 million tennis balls in the U.S. over the next three years.

“This program with RecycleBalls gives our brand and players a truly viable way to make our communities and our sport better,” said Kyle Schlegel, Global Marketing Director, Wilson Racquet Sports. “We chose to work with the RecycleBalls team as their passion for sustainability in the game matched our own, and they have spent the past several years building a strong infrastructure, operations system, and outreach programs to make recycling and repurposing tennis balls a reality.”

“Wilson and RecycleBalls are making a commitment to keep tennis balls out of landfills and repurposing them into socially relevant products like tennis courts, playgrounds, turf, and more,” said Derrick Senior, Founder of RecycleBalls. “What started as a mission my son and I shared is, with Wilson Sporting Goods’ help, becoming a nationally recognized and adopted program. To date, our growing partner network, which has nearly 650 members, has kept nearly one million tennis balls out of US landfills.”

The newest member of the RecycleBalls partner network is Sport Group, the world’s largest sports surface manufacturer. Sport Group will use recycled tennis ball material in their Laykold Masters tennis courts.

“I am delighted that Sport Group has come on board with their Laykold court brand, which is one of the most well-known brands in the game,” added Senior. “It is a great story for tennis – the balls go from bouncing on the court to being used in the court.”

RecycleBalls offers a cost-effective solution for partner facilities and organizations by providing specialized bins for the collection of tennis ball donations at clubs and public facilities nationwide. These bins are placed directly on tennis courts, giving players a convenient way to be part of the solution.

All donation bins double as a shipping box with conveniently attached prepaid UPS shipping labels. When full, UPS picks up the containers and delivers them to Recycleballs. Partners receive RecycleBalls’ tax-deductible donation receipts for all donated balls.

When tennis balls arrive at RecycleBalls’ Vermont facility, the non-profit removes the felt and grinds the balls into RecycleBalls Green-Gold, a natural crumb rubber mixture that is 99 percent felt-free. This mixture is then provided to partner organizations to create new, sustainable products such as Laykold tennis courts.

Tennis players and enthusiasts are invited to participate in this innovative program through their own tennis ball collection efforts or via donations to help fund RecycleBalls’ mission. For individuals wishing to recycle tennis balls, RecycleBalls provides online shipping labels along with a tax deductible donation receipt. Rekortan Celebrates 30 Years as the Official Surface of The Penn Relays!

There really aren’t that many things that have been around the track and field world as long as Rekortan but The Penn Relays is the great grandfather of them all.  It is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, occurring annually since 1895.

Held each year during the last week of April, The Penn Relays regularly attract over 100,000 fans during a 3 day period with as many as 50,000 attending on Saturdays. The event will host more than 15,000 participants from High Schools, Colleges and Track Clubs throughout North America and abroad. It is held at the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field, the oldest stadium in the country that functions as both a football and track stadium.

The track at Franklin Field also has a historic background. It is a Rekortan track. When Rekortan debuted in 1969, it took the track world by storm with its innovation and performance – quickly earning the reputation as the “fast tracks”.  Over 4 decades later, Rekortan tracks not only carry on speed and tradition, they completely redefine it. The most advanced running surfaces in the world, Rekortan systems are simply unmatched for quality, technology, and of course, pure, blinding speed.

Rekortan has been a proud to be the official surface of The Penn Relays since 1988 when their first system was installed at Franklin Field. Every year since, the relays have been run on a Rekortan surface and countless records have been broken on this track that has a reputation for consistency and dependability.

The most recent installation of the surface occurred in 2015 when an exclusive Rekortan distributor, ATT Sports Inc., installed a Rekortan M99 System. The M99 track is a 15mm, impermeable, full pour system featuring three layers: a self-leveling fluid applied polyurethane coat, an innovative central force-reduction layer, and a fluid applied polyurethane topcoat with a dense matrix or broadcast EPDM rubber granule with no solvents or filler added. The system is fast for sprinters and kind to endurance athletes.

“It’s exciting to know that our track is under the soles of world-class athletes and that it is the preferred surface of The Penn Relays”, said Heard Smith, CEO of SportGroup North America. “We look forward to this event each year and celebrating 30 years as a sponsor makes this year even more special.”

The 2018 Penn Relays will be held Thursday through Saturday, April 26-28. Thursday, April 26 will feature High School Girls, College Women and Nighttime Distance Races
Friday, April 27 will feature High School Boys & Girls, College Men & Women and Olympic Development Races.  Saturday, April 28 will feature College Men & Women, High School Boys and USA vs. The World Races. A full schedule of events and detailed race times may be found at www.thepennrelays.com

A statement on potential cancer risks from exposure to SBR in artificial turf fields

The FIFA Medical Committee has released a letter concerning possible exposure to SBR in artificial turf fields, noting that “a large number of studies have further confirmed that the effect of SBR rubber are as negligible as the effect of ingesting grilled foods or exposure to tyre wear on roads in everyday life.” FIFA is referring to the recent studies conducted by the Dutch RIVM, ECHA and Washington state. With respect to the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s), FIFA noted that “there is no scientific evidence of these being bioavailable in their application as car tyres and infill for artificial turf fields thereafter.” Finally,  FIFA stated that “while it will never be possible to exclude risk completely or prove this negative, the newer studies have confirmed the previous findings that there is no evidence of link between contracting cancer.”

Bat Droppings on Laykold

Fruit bats are found in most parts of Australia. They are a protected species but can become a nuisance not only for their noise but also for their droppings. Being that their main diet is fruit and nectar, their droppings contain high acidic levels that damage acrylic coatings on sports courts and recreational areas unless removed early.
